Post-pandemic, the world is slowly re-emerging, but the devastation left in its wake has sparked conversations about the importance of mental health–especially in underserved communities.


While some cases deserve professional mental health care, there are many ways you can support and improve your mental health on your own. Here are a few of DuBose’s favorite tips.

Value Yourself Says James Lamont DuBose

It’s important that, especially in times of crisis, you are kind to yourself, says James Lamont DuBose. Treat yourself the way you would treat a beloved family member or friend. Make time for self-care, whatever form that may take. Whether it’s allowing time for your hobbies and projects or treating yourself to a new experience like seeing a new movie or taking an art class.


It’s also important to develop routines that let your body know it’s safe and cared for. Taking long baths, working in the garden, dancing, playing an instrument–these are all things that bring joy and lower stress. Less stress means fewer snap reactions, less impulsive behavior, and more confidence and happiness.

Surround Yourself With a Supportive Community

People who have built strong family ties, friendships, and social connections are less likely to experience feelings of isolation which can trigger depression, anxiety, and addictive tendencies.


Living somewhere new or lacking the support you need? Meet people by joining a class or club that interests you. Having common interests helps pave the way to building new relationships with like-minded people.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the act of observing your feelings and thoughts without judgment and letting them pass. The goal of mindfulness is to be fully present in the moment rather than worrying about the past, which cannot be changed, and the future, which hasn’t yet come to pass.


People who practice mindfulness report fewer instances of emotional eating and binge drinking, have healthier, longer-lasting relationships, and have less trouble sleeping than those who do not. All of these things contribute greatly to your mental health, says James Lamont DuBose.

Avoid Drugs and Alcohol

If you are worried about your mental health or trying to reduce depression and anxiety, it’s best to stay away from drugs and alcohol. These substances interfere with your sleep patterns, depress your immune system, and mess up your serotonin production–all of which can worsen symptoms of depression and anxiety.


Although drugs and alcohol provide a temporary escape for those who self-medicate, they don’t solve the problems you’re trying to avoid. And those problems are often compounded by a lack of attention and the effects of drugs and alcohol.
